I get asked after a massage:
"How often would you recommend I come in?"
When this question comes up it's a perfect opportunity to educate clients on my approach to bodywork. You hold the keys to your recovery and health management schedule. For some people it's important to come in every week. The regularity in the beginning of us working together can help break up the chronic pain and compensatory patterns set within the body and nervous system. A glitchy inhalation is a great example of a nervous system patterning. Another is lifting the shoulder when asked to tilt the head, or lifting both shoulders when asked to move one of them. Those examples will lead into another post later, because I want to get back to the body signals that will help you find the best pace for a treatment plan.
We are living such fast paced lives, in a time when the constant load of information to the senses makes the perfect setup for depletion and stress. Our schedules, obligations and responsibilities can make it hard to tune in to what the body is needing. Or we get into an inertia with To Do list that takes over our lives, our body communications and natural energy rhythms. We try to get more and more out of time. Maximize this, minimize that, efficiency this, trend that. Those needs combined with our other responsibilities makes a perfect storm for depletion and disconnect. Some of us aren't eating real food anymore because it's much easier to eat a bar on the run or drink a powder potion. I'm smiling to myself because that was my life for at least a decade, so in some ways I'm either a hypocrite or an expert! (10,000 hours of snacks on the go. Is this a money making recipe book or what? As I'm eating trail mix for lunch...) We just want things to be easy. For things to be spelled out or the decision made for the things that don't seem to matter. And of course we do, time is a non-renewable resource.
We're managing so many details every step of the way. I encourage each client to tune in to the treatment schedule that is right for them. Your body tells you what it needs and its' preferred pace. We can do regular tune ups to stay ahead of the original tension pattern after the initial break-through and recovery sessions. Depending on your health and wellness goals, we can hone in on the right body-paced treatment plan for you. If you are a parent, have work, community, fitness plan AND a hectic schedule, I recommend coming in as often as is needed without creating more stress. There is such a thing as a health plan that is too much, I've discovered it! Massage therapy, counseling, acupuncture, chiropractic, nutrition, personal training plus work, play, family life balance all in the same week sounds exhausting to me. A lot of you are superheroes and can do this. Each person is different which is why I like to work with clients on the importance of a body-paced treatment plan. Online booking helps make all of this easy. Streamlining works for a lot of great things. Streamlining out our body's signals and requests isn't the best way to go. Trust me, I've tried it.
